Medical, mental health, & dermatology telehealth services
Interested in scheduling a confidential visit with a health care provider outside of Cornell Health? Teladoc, one of several national telehealth services providers, may be right for you.
SHP and SHP+ members now have prepaid access to Teladoc services, with copays consistent with the plans’ participating provider copay structure (see more below).

Teladoc services include:
- General medical services – 24/7 on-demand access to board-certified doctors by phone, video, or mobile app.
- Mental health care – Online appointments with therapists available 7 days a week to get support for anxiety, depression, stress, and more. Psychiatry support for some medications also available.
- Dermatology – Upload images and provide details about your skin condition and receive a response in two business days from a licensed dermatologist. Medication prescription and follow-up appointments also available.

Students with SHP or SHP+
Students who are enrolled in a Cornell Student Health Plan (SHP or SHP+) have prepaid access to telehealth services through Teladoc, with copays consistent with the plans’ participating provider copay structure.
Copays for SHP / SHP+ members:
- $25 for medical and psychiatry visits (refundable*)
- $10 for mental health visits (refundable*)
*Currently, there is no copay for telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic, per regulations governing insurance companies practicing in NY State. Teladoc will refund any copayments in compliance with NY State regulations.
Teladoc Copay Cards
To use Teladoc:
- Create an online account using the Aetna Member ID# printed on your SHP/SHP+ insurance card. (If you do not have your card, you can download and/or print it from the Aetna website.)
- Log in using your new account.
- Select your provider via the Teladoc website or mobile app.
- Complete your medical history and Teladoc's Emotional Health Questionnaire.
- Schedule an appointment to speak with your provider.
- If you need assistance at any step in this process, call 1-800-Teladoc (1-800-835-2362).
Students with private insurance
Students with private insurance may have Teladoc’s services – or services provided by another national telehealth service – covered by their plan. Check your insurance company’s website for coverage information, or call the phone number listed on your insurance card to ask about your coverage.
If you plan doesn’t cover services through Teladoc, you can still use Teladoc (U.S. residents only). However, you will be responsible for paying the full charge for services and then submitting a receipt to your insurance plan for possible reimbursement.
Because of COVID-19 concerns and current strains on health care offices, you may want to talk with a doctor about an urgent, non-emergency health concern without leaving your home.
Teladoc Physicians
Your usual in-network primary care provider may be providing you with telephone consultations or consultations by video on your phone or computer, also known as “telehealth” services. We urge you to use these services for urgent, non-emergency issues if the services are available to you. Please keep in mind that telehealth services may not be used for preventive or routine care, such as an annual physical.
Teladoc Registration
If you have an urgent, non-emergency health concern, and it is outside of your doctor’s usual business hours, you have access to Teladoc virtual health care to supplement your usual in-network care. You may also use Teladoc services during ordinary business hours if your doctor does not provide telehealth services. The information below and in the FAQs at the right will help you understand how Teladoc works.
Please remember that our 24-Hour Nurse Advice Line at 1.866.767.4546 is also available to US Family Health Plan members to answer basic health questions (Does my cut need stitches? Should I worry about this rash?). Registered nurses are available to talk with you by phone every day, all day and night.

Urgent but not an emergency
Teladoc Fees
The conditions you might want to talk about with a Teladoc doctor are the kinds of concerns you might ordinarily bring to an urgent-care clinic outside of your doctor’s usual hours. These concerns might be, for example, a urinary tract infection, a sore throat, sinus problems, pink eye, or allergies.
How Much Is Teladoc
Teladoc and COVID-19
If you have mild, flu-like symptoms, please call your doctor before you go to a health care facility. If it is outside of your doctor’s business hours, you can consult virtually with a Teladoc doctor about your symptoms or if you have questions about COVID-19.
Behavioral health
Behavioral health consultations with behavioral health specialists for conditions like anxiety are also available. Behavioral Health Teladoc services are not available for children under age 18. US Family Health US Family Health Plan members who need help finding a Behavioral Health specialist who provides telehealth services for a child under age 18 should call Member Services.
Pediatrics
Teladoc also provides virtual consultations with pediatricians for urgent but not emergency matters.
Dermatology
You can schedule a virtual visit with a dermatologist for skin conditions like a rash or infection, eczema, or acne.
Who are the Teladoc doctors?
Teladoc doctors are U.S. board-certified internists, state-licensed family practitioners, and pediatricians licensed to practice medicine in the U.S. and living in the U.S. When you request a visit, Teladoc will connect you with a doctor licensed in your state.
Teladoc behavior health specialists include psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, clinical social workers, and therapists. (Of these, only psychiatrists can prescribe medications.)
Can Teladoc doctors prescribe medications?
Yes. If the doctor prescribes medication, the prescription is submitted electronically (SureScripts) or by phone to the US Family Health Plan Home Delivery Pharmacy (maintenance medications ) or a retail pharmacy (urgent or one-time prescriptions).
Do I need a referral?
No referrals are necessary to use Teladoc.
What is my copay?
US Family Health Plan members are not required to pay copays to use the Teladoc service.
