The Coral Springs Museum of Art is recognized as a community anchor developing programming to meet the needs of the South Florida community. As a result, the Museum has implemented “Kaleidoscope: the Beauty of Autism”, an art making program designed especially for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).

Regardless of abilities, art is a form of expression that requires little, perhaps no verbal interaction – art permeates the very deepest part of a person where no words exist. Because of this, art opens doors of communication.

This program, delivered by professional artists, allows children an opportunity to explore the creative process in a creative environment. Creativity sparks curiosity; curiosity leads to enriched learning.

“As Autism Coach at Wingate Oaks Center School, it has been my pleasure to participate with students in the amazing art program created by the Coral Springs Art Museum. The museum went out of their way to create a program uniquely designed to meet social, cognitive, and communicative needs of our students. Not only did they create a unique program which appealed to a variety of special needs students, but they were very conscientious about changing, and adjusting all components of the program to assure student enjoyment as well as success. In addition, they arranged for student volunteers to be present and engaged in activities with our students. Our children exceeded our expectations in interacting with these children.
Over the course of 6 weeks, I witnessed a huge change in students, and in teachers as well. The students, were initially hesitant to experiment with different mediums. However, as the weeks passed, the majority of students were engaged in all centers. In addition, the teachers learned to take a step back in working with students and allow students to become more independent and adventurous. Not only did this pertain to the museum visits, but also to their own classrooms. Several teachers created more student directed areas in which student interest dictated the type of centers to be created.

“This program made a huge impact for the majority of all students in all areas. We have seen an increase in communication and social skills, as well as independence and improvement in behaviors. Many of our students are telling us how they feel, are more willing to try new things, and have become more social with their peers, etc. It has been amazing. Every student, nonverbal/verbal was always excited to go to the art museum and upset that it was finished. Watching students want to engage in activities and stay with them was very exciting. Students who use assistive technology to speak are using it more as well. Overall the program has had a huge impact on our students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I would recommend this program to all of the public and private schools in Broward County.”

“The Kaleidoscope program was a tremendous experience for our learners as well as our staff.
During our visits to the museum, my teachers were able to gain a new appreciation for the value of our learners’ ability to make choices. It was so exciting to see those skills develop within our children through the Arts. The artists, your staff and the student mentors from Saint Andrew were outstanding and they were able to quickly build trusting relationships with our children.”

Sponsored in part by BBX Capital, Coral Springs Community Chest & Children of the Arts Foundation (COTA). Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Funding for this programming is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division.
